On the exterior wall on a building near the west gate of JR Beppu Station, you can find a wall art made by Shigaraki-yaki tiles. It is called “Midori no taiyo” (The Green Sun) and this artwork is one of the “Taiyo (The Sun) series” of the prominent artist, Taro Okamoto. The owner of this building directly negotiated with Taro Okamoto who was creating “Taiyo no toh” (The Tower of the Sun) which was the symbol of Osaka World Exposition in 1970. Though he was quite busy with the preparation for the Exposition at the time, he immediately accepted the owner’s request. This was because Beppu was a place of a good old memory with his parents for him. You might hear his famous words “Art is an explosion” from this wall art.
