This transportation hub has souvenir shops, a convenience store, bakery, and restaurants, as well as an information center that has a foreign tourist desk. Located on the east side of JR Beppu Station is a larger-than life statue of Kumahachi Aburaya, who contributed to building tourism in Beppu city. An advertising slogan that he created to promote Beppu across the country, “The best of Japan: Mt. Fuji, Seto Island Sea and Beppu Hot Springs”, is written on the statue. Also his motto, “Don’t forget to show hospitality to strangers”, is on the other side of it. A monument next to the statue demonstrates the abundant hot springs that come from all parts of the city. You can dip your hands in the hot water pool (Hand bath).
