It is said that the origin of Beppu bamboo crafts dates back to 1900 years ago.
When Emperor Keikou (70 – 130 AD) was on the way back from the suppression against the rebellion in Kyushu, he stopped in Beppu. One of his kitchen workers discovered the high quality bamboo in Beppu and made baskets for keeping rice.
In the Edo period (1603 – 1868), the place called Beppu became known as a great hot spring resort throughout the country. Many kinds of daily items and souvenirs for incoming tourists were made by bamboo and sold in the market.
After the Meiji Restoration, bamboo products in Beppu were not only limited to practical items, but they evolved into art crafts by using advanced technology. In 1979, Beppu bamboo products were designated as one of Japan’s traditional craft products by Ministry of Trade and Industry (current Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry).
You can see elaborate bamboo crafts created by many artists in the exhibition hall there.
